Running Back Training
The keys to being a great running back — vision, patience, explosiveness, balance, toughness, and football intelligence.
Fundamentals
More than speed
Being a great running back takes more than speed. The best running backs combine vision, patience, explosiveness, balance, toughness, and football intelligence to consistently make plays.
These are the fundamentals Rodrick Walker teaches and develops when you train with him. His training is designed to help running backs understand the position, sharpen the skills that matter on the field, and become more complete, confident players.
The keys
What separates good from great
Vision
See the field and understand how blocks are developing. Recognize running lanes, anticipate openings, and identify cutback opportunities instead of simply running to where the play was designed.
Patience & Timing
Give your blockers time to create the running lane. Be patient behind the line and explosive once the opportunity appears — slow to the hole, fast through the hole.
Decisive Running
Once you see the opening, commit. Make one decisive cut, get your shoulders square, and accelerate downhill. Hesitation gives defenders time to recover.
Explosiveness
Great running backs quickly go from controlled movement to full acceleration. That burst through the line of scrimmage is the difference between a short gain and a big play.
Balance & Body Control
Stay low, maintain a strong base, keep your feet moving, and maintain balance through contact to turn potential tackles into additional yards.
Ball Security
Keep the ball high and tight, maintain multiple points of contact, and secure it with both hands when running through traffic. Protecting the football is non-negotiable.
Change of Direction
Plant, cut, and accelerate without wasting movement. Strong footwork lets a runner change direction without losing significant speed.
Run North & South
Not every play is a touchdown. Understand when to stop searching for the big play, get downhill, and take the available yards. Positive yardage keeps the offense moving.
Finish the Run
Keep your legs moving through contact, protect the football, and fight for positive yardage. Great running backs consistently finish runs moving forward.
Understand the Offense
Elite running backs understand blocking assignments, defensive fronts, leverage, and how the defense affects where the running lane will develop.
Contribute Without the Ball
Block, catch passes, execute play-action fakes, and understand assignments. A complete running back contributes even when he isn't carrying the football.

Details matter
Protect the football
Ball security is non-negotiable at every level. Rodrick emphasizes keeping the ball high and tight, maintaining multiple points of contact, and securing it with both hands when running through traffic. The best running backs never put the ball on the ground.
Finish every rep
Finish the run
Keep your legs moving through contact, protect the football, and fight for positive yardage. Great running backs consistently finish runs moving forward — turning what looks like a stop into a first down.
