Defensive Lineman Training
The keys to being a great defensive lineman — explosiveness, leverage, hand technique, pass-rush moves, run defense, and relentless effort.
Fundamentals
More than size
Being a great defensive lineman takes more than size, strength, or aggression. The best defensive linemen combine explosiveness, footwork, leverage, hand technique, power, discipline, and football intelligence to disrupt offenses and control the line of scrimmage.
These are the fundamentals Rodrick Walker teaches and develops when you train with him. His training is designed to help defensive linemen develop proper technique, improve their explosiveness, and learn how to consistently defeat blocks and make plays.
The keys
What separates good from great
Stance & Get-Off
Great defensive line play starts before contact. A strong stance and explosive first step allow a defensive lineman to attack the offensive line and gain an immediate advantage.
Explosiveness
The first few steps matter. Great defensive linemen develop the ability to explode off the football and quickly turn their strength into power.
Hand Technique
Defensive linemen must learn to use their hands effectively. Quick hands, proper placement, and violent but controlled technique keep blockers away from their bodies.
Leverage & Pad Level
Low man wins. Playing with proper pad level allows a defensive lineman to generate power, maintain balance, and control blockers at the point of attack.
Block Recognition
Great defensive linemen recognize what the offensive line is trying to do. Understanding different blocks and reacting quickly allows them to maintain responsibility and find the football.
Block Shedding
Getting into the backfield starts with defeating the blocker. Defensive linemen must learn how to create separation, disengage, and attack the ball carrier.
Pass-Rush Technique
Getting to the quarterback requires more than speed. Great pass rushers develop multiple moves and know when to use power, speed, or technique.
Run Defense
A complete defensive lineman must hold his ground, control his gap, locate the football, defeat the block, and finish the tackle.
Pursuit
The play isn't over when the football goes away from you. Great defensive linemen pursue from the backside, take proper angles, and continue competing until the whistle.
Tackling
Getting into the backfield doesn't matter if you don't finish the play. Defensive linemen must develop sound tackling technique and learn to finish under control.
Football IQ
Elite defensive linemen study formations, blocking schemes, tendencies, down and distance, and offensive line movement so they can react faster.
Relentless Effort
Defensive line is a position built on effort. Great defensive linemen compete every snap, pursue the football, and refuse to take plays off.

Details matter
Get to the quarterback
Great pass rushers develop multiple moves and understand how to attack an offensive lineman's weaknesses. Rodrick teaches hand speed, leverage, and the timing needed to turn pressure into sacks.
Control the line
Run defense
A complete defensive lineman holds his ground, controls his gap, locates the football, defeats the block, and finishes the tackle. Rodrick emphasizes leverage, block recognition, and playing with discipline.
